Caribbean

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast has tropical rainforest, Tortuguero Canal and huge banana and pineapple plantations.  Beaches here are tan-colored with lush rainforest and vegetation all around.  Tortuguero Canal is a haven for birds and animals.  Barra del Colorado features exceptional Tarpon and Snook fishing.  Tortuguero Beach is the nesting site for hundreds of Green Sea turtles and there’s a small but interesting turtle museum there.  The South Caribbean features quiet beaches and tropical rainforest.  Several rivers offer World-class whitewater rafting nearby.  Banana and pineapple plantation tours are available here.  But the Caribbean is flat, hot, humid and isolated from the rest of Costa Rica.  Higher crime rates, large-scale banana and pineapple farming, a lack of hotels and activities make the Caribbean less desirable for most people.  But the Caribbean is perfect if you want to get away from people and don’t need many options to choose from.

Attractions
Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero Canal was built about 100 years ago to transport bananas up and down the coast.  It was abandoned and is now home to a large rainforest reserve with a wide variety of plants and animals.  Canal tours are the best way to see the wildlife.

Rainforest

Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Reserve on the South Caribbean Coast is a pristine tropical rainforest reserve with a wide variety of plant and animal species.  Guided hikes are the best way to experience this reserve.

Beaches

The beaches on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica are tan-colored with dense vegetation all around.  They are generally less crowded and more isolated with some snorkeling and diving near Cahuita.

Activities
Boat Tours

Tortuguero Canal tours are one of the highlights on the entire Caribbean Coast.  Professional guides point out and describe the rainforest and its inhabitants from comfortable, flat-bottom boats.

Hiking

Guided hikes in the rainforest are available on the South Caribbean Coast and in Tortuguero Canal.  The tropical rainforest here is home to a huge variety of native and migratory birds, plants and animals.

Tarpon and Snook Fishing

Outstanding Tarpon and Snook fishing is found on the North Caribbean Coast in Barra del Colorado.  You must fly in to go fishing because there are no roads.  A few small lodges cater to the anglers.  We recommend 3-5 nights here.  While high quality, fishing is expensive.

Whitewater Rafting

The nearby Pacuare River is one of the top 5 rivers in the World for rafting.  Its pristine rainforest and beautiful canyon provide for a memorable rafting experience.  The Reventazon River is more tame and goes through rainforest and ranchlands.  Both are Class 3-4 rapids.  The Pacuare offers one-day or multi-day trips.
