Car Rental

Most of our customers rent a car and are very happy they did.  Having your own vehicle gives you flexibility: you can go where you want to go when you want to go.  Restaurants and attractions are usually not within walking distance and taxis are not plentiful (except in San Jose).  Having flexibility is important because Costa Rica is very rural.  If you don't have a car, you're stuck at your hotel.

Driving in Costa Rica is generally safe and not difficult if you follow some basic rules and common sense. When you book a rental car with us, we provide you with very specific written directions and a map.

Many people are afraid to rent a car in Costa Rica because they've read horror stories on the Internet. We disagree.  We've had very few bad experiences through the years and with thousands of vacations.

A variety of cars are available for rent. 4x4's are more expensive than passenger cars.  Depending on where you go, you might need a 4x4.  Some people prefer 4x4's because they provide better visibility for the driver and more clearance.  We'll recommend the best car for your needs and budget.

Insurance is mandatory in Costa Rica.  Generally speaking, your credit card car rental insurance is not applicable in Costa Rica, even with top level Platinum cards.  You must have a credit card (talk to us about debit cards!), a valid Passport, Driver's license and be over the age of 21 to rent a car in Costa Rica.

Gas stations are widely available in Costa Rica.  Gasoline prices fluctuate in Costa Rica just like everywhere else, but are generally about $2 per gallon higher than in the U.S.

We only work with reputable, reliable car rental agencies.  Most of the biggest names (Hertz, Avis, etc.) do not provide the best service in Costa Rica.  We know which agencies provide the best service.

The cost of your car rental depends on many factors, including the dates, type of vehicle, number of days, agency, etc.  All of our itineraries include taxes, mandatory basic insurance and unlimited mileage.  You will not have any hidden charges or surprises when you book your car rental with us.

Call us today to talk about the best rental car option for you. Below, we do not list every model of car in every category because there are too many.  Following are general categories of available vehicles.

Vehicles
Small/Compact Cars

A small car is suitable for most destinations in Costa Rica for 1-2 people.  Examples include a Hyundai Accent, Nissan Sentra, Nissan Almera, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Yaris.  These cars are not for tall or big people.  Manual or automatic transmission.

Small 4x4's

A small SUV/4x4 is suitable if you are going to areas that require 4-wheel drive and for 1-2 people.  These are very small vehicles.  Examples include a Daihatsu Bego or Suzuki Jimny.  Manual or automatic.

Mid-size 4x4's

A mid-size SUV/4x4 is suitable if you are going to areas that require 4-wheel drive or for up to 4 people. These vehicles will go anywhere. Examples include a Suzuki Gran Vitara and Toyota Rav 4. Manual or automatic.

Large 4x4's

A large SUV/4x4 is suitable if you are going to areas that require 4-wheel drive and for up to 4 people. These are roomy and comfortable in the back seat and have enough room for luggage for 4. Examples include a Mitsubishi Montero, Toyota 4-Runner, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Prado. Manual or automatic.

Passenger Vans

A van is the only vehicle suitable for 5 - 7 people. They are not 4-wheel drive but are very spacious with room for luggage. Most are diesel and cheaper to operate. Examples include a Nissan Urvan and Toyota Hiace. Manual transmission only.
