Costa Rica Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding

Costa Rica abounds with rural countryside, expansive pastureland and agriculture. In many areas, horses are still used by ranchers and farmers in their daily work. Most horses in Costa Rica are Criollos, direct descendants of horses brought to the new world by Columbus. These sturdy, compact animals are prized for their hardiness and comfortable gait.

Horseback riding tours are readily available almost everywhere in Costa Rica. However, all stables are not alike and not all horses are well trained and well cared for. It is a challenge to maintain good horse health in the tropics and not all operators invest the time and money to do so. If you feel sorry for the poor animal lugging you across the terrain, it detracts from your tour experience. We choose riding tours that have healthy, well trained horses. For example, our favorite horse tour uses "Easyboots" to protect the horses' front feet and legs.

Horseback riding is a relaxing, fun way to view Costa Rica's natural beauty. With the right horse and guide, no prior experience is required. Some companies can accomodate younger children. Depending on your interests and riding ability, you can choose trails to waterfalls where you can swim in the river under the waterfall or have a natural mud therapy treatment. Ride through primary and secondary rainforest or trot in open pastureland. In the right locale, you can also ride on the beach.
