Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers several different types of kayaking, including sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, inflatable kayaking and lake kayaking. This is an active, affordable and fun way to explore natural areas otherwise not accessible. For most kayaking, no experience is needed.

Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking is most easily accessed near Jaco beach on the Central Pacific coast. Take a half day tour, kayaking along the coastline to a white sand beach where you can swim and snorkel. Outrigger canoes are also available for groups.

Lake Kayaking

Kayaking on Lake Arenal is very scenic and dramatic. Arenal Volcano with its commanding presence is the perfect backdrop for the sparkling waters of the lake below. The open waters provide a relaxing setting, with lush shoreline vegetation.

Jungle Kayaking

"Jungle" kayaking usually takes place on inland waterways and calm rivers. The most easily accessible tour is Isla Damas near Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific Coast. Paddle through a lush estuary: home to exotic waterfowl. Then explore deeper into the mangrove forests with their amazing jumbled root systems. Tours are also available on the Osa Peninsula and Tortuguero Canal.

Inflatable Kayaking

Inflatable kayaking is available on the Arenal River. Although these runs are short, there is a shuttle service to take you back to the put in. In addition, there is no limit to the number of times you can go down the rapids.

Whitewater Kayaking

Whitewater kayaking requires experience and rafting companies require you perform a skills test. Locations for this activity are limited.
