South Pacific

Costa Rica’s South Pacific Coast is a wild and rugged wilderness area, with spectacular tropical rainforest all around.  Corcovado National Park, on the Osa Peninsula, is one of the most biologically intense places on Earth.  Corcovado features an astounding variety of plant and animal life.  The South Pacific Coast features World-class fishing, hiking and the best scuba diving in Costa Rica.  Flying on small aircraft is the best way to access the South Pacific because it is far away from everything else in Costa Rica.  The South Pacific Coast is wetter than other parts of Costa Rica, so it tends to rain more consistently throughout the year.  The South Pacific is green, lush and beautiful throughout the year.

Attractions
Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is the most biologically diverse National Park in Costa Rica.  An astounding variety and number of bird, plant and animal species call this area home.  This is a true Tropical Rainforest.  Consistent rains throughout the year nourish all life here.  Corcovado is one of the World’s great remaining natural treasures.

Caño Island

Caño Island features tropical rainforest, scuba diving, and snorkeling. An ancient burial ground with some of the mysterious and ancient stone spheres makes for an interesting day trip from Drake Bay.

Activities
Hiking

Guided daytime and nighttime hikes are available in Corcovado National Park and in various private rainforest reserves on the Osa Peninsula.  Most hikes are half-day, but some are full-day or multi-day for the more adventurous campers.  We recommend at least one hike in Corcovado for nearly everyone.

Fishing

World-class Inshore fishing and Sportfishing are available in Golfo Dulce year-round.  Several World Records have been set in these waters, especially for Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper and Pacific Sailfish.  A couple hotels/lodges specialize in fishing here, but fishing is expensive.

Scuba Diving

Caño Island, about 20 miles West of Drake Bay, offers the best scuba diving in Costa Rica.  Prolific fish life large pelagics make diving here unique and interesting.  But moderate visibility, strong surges and currents make diving here more challenging than other destinations.
